[Read by Tom Taylorson]

New York Times bestselling author Archer Mayor presents the latest installment in the bestselling Joe Gunther mystery series.

A forty-year-old skeleton is found encased in a concrete slab at a recently decommissioned nuclear energy site. It becomes a case for the Vermont Bureau of Investigation (VBI) and its leader, Joe Gunther, since they have the resources and the ability to investigate an old, very cold, missing persons case that has now been reclassified as murder. The victim was Hank Mitchell, and Gunther must chase down old rumors and speculations Who benefited from his death and the disappearance of his body? And was his death somehow tied to New York City mafia money being laundered through the construction project?

But what seems the coldest of cold cases roars back to life when one of the central figures in this mystery is shot to death, right after speaking with Gunther. And when a young police officer -- the son of VBI investigator Lester Spinney -- is kidnapped, is it meant to be a warning to the VBI team to drop the case?

After all these many years, the truth behind the murder still has to the power to kill, and it's up to Gunther and his team to capture the living and finally put the dead to rest.

I first learned about Archer Mayor while traveling in Vermont in 2012. Since then I have read all of his previous 26 novels, and anxiously awaited this latest installment in the Joe Gunther series. Mayor did NOT disappoint! This book is every bit as suspenseful as the previous works, and is just a darned good read.

My only complaint is that he takes a year to put out a book, which then likely takes another year to work through the bowels of the publishing industry to make it to market ... and I devour it in 5-hours!! And now I have to wait another year. Oh the horror. :-)

I also love the fact that Mayor makes his home state of Vermont every bit as much a major character as his human characters. Being familiar with the state, his observations are often hilarious but always "spot-on".

Presumption of Guilt A Joe Gunther Novel Joe Gunther Mysteries Book 27 Archer Mayor 9781504782012 Books Reviews

I have read/listened to all of the Joe Gunther series. Obviously, I have enjoyed them. I like noting the changes in the characters and their professional and personal lives. I have also spent a night in Brattleboro and envision the setting although it has been a long time since I was there, enroute to Maine.
I anxiously await Mayor's new book every fall. I am lucky enough to live close to a bookstore in Vermont that he frequents on his book tours, so I have seen and heard him speak many times. Like most of his books, I read this one in 2 days. I have ready every one of his books and a couple of them I have read twice!
Have read ALL of the Joe Gunther series. Mayor keeps getting better at plotlines. The only thing I think could be eliminated is the sulking attitude of
his one handed comrade Willy, boring, doesn't had measurably to the storyline, has been "explained" waaaaay too many times. Yawn.
Archer Mayor is the greatest author I have ever read for a sense of place. His Joe Gunther novels take place in real towns and real places which makes it vastly more interesting to me, especially since I'm from Vermont and know these area's well.
One of my favorite series. Drove through Vermont last spring looking for familiar names. I've always loved Joe and Willie is becoming a favorite, too. He is changing to be almost tolerable--hope he never becomes too likeable! I am also enjoying the evolution of Joe and Beverly's relationship--very mature and very nice! I've never been disappointed with books from this series!
I've read all of the Gunther books and I pre-order as soon as a title comes online.

However, the only reason I finished this book was because of the great character development. I wanted to see what was going on in their lives (yes, I know it's fiction, but they feel like real people to me, which is the credit of the author).

The bad news is that the plot is plodding. It moves along at a glacial pace. Had the first book in the series been this devoid of mystery I would have never finished it nor would I have become a fan of the series. I finished the book two weeks ago. I could not remember who did it or how it ended. I had to go back to read the last few pages as a reminder. This is not a good sign.
Another great-read from Archer Mayor. A couple of predictable elements (Joe gets injured, the good guys arrive at the last second) but these are par for the genre - the Joe Gunther series has created its own universe and readers look forward to re-visiting it regularly. Gunther is now about 80 years old but he is as wonderfully suspended in time as Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin. Mayor's characters breathe. They exist and we think we know them. Every so often Mayor throws us a curve, just to keep it honest. This book is a page-turner with a tight plot and superb dialogue. The series is several notches above anything out there, though we haven't heard from Troy Soos and his baseball thrillers for a while. Thanks for pre-ordering so I don't miss a moment with my friends at the VBI.
